Fernandez To Captain Man United Against PSG As Maguire, Baily And Cavani Misses Out!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprised Bruno Fernandes at a joint media conference by announcing he would captain Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday after hailing the Portuguese's recent impact.

Fernandes has been a revelation since his arrival from Sporting in the January transfer window, scoring 12 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions during the second half of the 2020-21 season.

He also ended the campaign as the club's joint highest goal creator in the Premier League, sitting alongside Marcus Rashford with seven assists.

The 26-year-old has picked up where he left off this term, with his fine goal in United's 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday taking his tally to three goals in five appearances.

With Harry Maguire absent for United's Champions League clash in Paris, Solskjaer had no hesitation in giving the captain's armband to Fernandes after his impressive start to life as a United player.

"Bruno has come in and had great impact with all the stats showing that," he rold reporters ahead of the clash in Paris.

"His performances have been receiving real great praise as well. He has not changed the team, but he has sparked the team."

A visibly surprised Fernandes admitted he had no prior knowledge of Solskjaer's decision, describing it is a major milestone in his career.

"I was not expecting this, I have found out the same time as you," Fernandes said. "For me it's an honour. I will be captain for my team-mates and to be captain of Manchester United is an important achievement for me.

"But I think everyone is the captain. Everyone needs to help and be a leader in their own way; leadership is different in every player. Tomorrow will not be about me but the team.

"Leading is every day in the training ground, every game and everyone is doing their job to lead the team in the way they think is best."

Tuesday's game will be the first time the sides have met since United's stunning last-16 win over the French giants in March 2019, when Rashford's stoppage-time penalty sealed a 3-1 win in Paris after a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford in the first leg.

Solskjaer remembers the game fondly but insists it will have no bearing on how the match pans out against Thomas Tuchel's men this time around.

"Of course, that's history for us," Solskjaer said. "It's in the past. Great history, great game, but it has no impact whatsoever on this game.

"We're a different team, they're a different team. It's a different stage of the competition.

"Of course, also without fans it's going to be a different game. Because in the last game, when we got the first goal early on that impacted the ground, it's a completely new situation."

UPDATED: Aston Villa thrash Liverpool 7-2

Liverpool ’ s 100 percent start to the Premier League season came to an end in stunning fashion as Ollie Watkins’ s first- half hat- trick helped Aston Villa thrash the English champions 7- 2 on Sunday .
Deflected efforts from John McGinn , Ross Barkley , and Jack Grealish compounded a night to forget for Jurgen Klopp ’ s men before Grealish completed the scoring .
Ollie Watkins nets a first - half hat- trick as champions Liverpool are torn apart .
Watkins is the first player to score a PL hat - trick against Liverpool since Dimitar Berbatov for Man Utd in September 2010.
He is also the first English - born player to do so since Kevin Lisbie for Charlton in September 2003.
It is the first time Liverpool have conceded seven goals in a game since 1963.
The Reds were not beaten until their 28 th league game in romping to the title last season .
But a fine start to their title defence came undone without injured goalkeeper Alisson Becker and with Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane unavailable due to coronavirus infections .
Alisson ’ s absence made a telling impact after just four minutes to get Villa in front as Adrian’ s poor pass was seized upon by Grealish , who squared for the former Watkins to score his first Premier League goal.
Mane was also missed at the other end as Liverpool laid seige to the Villa goal , but were too easily opened up on the counter- attack .
Barkley twice should have opened his Villa account in the first- half as he skewed shots wide from close range either side of Watkins ’ s second .
Grealish was again the creator with a long ball down the side of the Liverpool defence and the former Brentford striker cut inside before blasting into the top corner .
Mohamed Salah seemed to have got the visitors a foothold back in the match when he slammed home on his trusty left- foot after Mane ’ s understudy , Diogo Jota , tried to burrow a way into the penalty area .
But Villa quickly restored their two - goal cushion when John McGinn ’ s effort from the edge of the area deflected in off Virgil van Dijk .
Liverpool ’ s high line was being caught out even from set plays as six minutes before the break Trezeguet broke the offside trap to cross for Watkins to become the first player in a decade to score a hat- trick against Liverpool .
Fortune favoured Villa ’ s desire not to just sit on their lead after the break as Barkley ’ s long - range effort looped over the helpless Adrian to make it 5 - 1 .
Salah remained razor sharp in front of goal to move within one away from 100 for Liverpool with a brilliant finish from Roberto Firmino ’ s pass .
Having seen enough from Joe Gomez , Klopp moved midfielder Firmino into his back four early in the second - half , but it did nothing to stem the flow of Villa attacks cutting through his defence .
Grealish completed a hat- trick of deflected goals when his shot hit Fabinho to wrong- foot Adrian again .
Watkins missed two huge chances to score his fourth as Adrian saved a one - on - one before he hit the crossbar .
Grealish , though , was more clinical when he raced through to round off a remarkable victory .
Villa stayed up by a single point on the final day of last season , but they have now won their opening three games of the new league campaign to move up to

BREAKING: Liverpool stage comback to beat Arsenal 3-1

Liverpool came from behind to maintain a perfect start to their Premier League title defence as goals from Sadio Mane , Andy Robertson and Diogo Jota saw off a resilient Arsenal 3 - 1 at Anfield .
The Gunners had also won their opening two league games of the season and hit the champions on the counter- attack to take the lead through Alexandre Lacazette .
But while Manchester City , Chelsea, Manchester United , Tottenham and now Arsenal have all lost in the opening three weeks of the new campaign, Liverpool have taken maximum points to lay down an early marker that they remain the team to beat in the Premier League this season .
The outcome of the match could have been very different had Mane not escaped with just a yellow card for an elbow on Kieran Tierney after just three minutes .
Arsenal followed the game plan that had brought them two victories over Liverpool in recent months as they dropped deep then looked to play around the Reds’ press when in possession.
However , unlike when they met at the back end of last season ’ s Premier League when Jurgen Klopp ’ s men had already won the league or the Community Shield in August , Liverpool were far sharper in pulling the Gunners out of position .
Mane was first to threaten with a clean strike from Trent Alexander- Arnold’ s cross that was too close to Bernd Leno before Alexander - Arnold’ s deflected effort came back off the crossbar .
The only time Arsenal did manage to pierce the Liverpool press before half - time, they opened the scoring completely against the run of play.
Robertson was at fault as he spooned Ainsley Maitland -Niles’ s cross into the path of Lacazette , who also failed to make a proper connection but the ball bounced into the ground and looped over the helpless Alisson Becker .
Liverpool responded immediately to level within three minutes as Salah outmuscled Tierney and when his shot was parried across goal by Leno, Mane turned into an empty net .
Robertson them made amends for his previous error as Liverpool ’ s flying full - backs combined as Alexander-Arnold’ s cross was this time converted by the Scotland captain .
However , where Arsenal sides of recent years might have collapsed, as they did in losing 4 - 0 and 5 - 1 at Anfield in 2018 and 2019 , Mikel Arteta has instilled a new - found belief in the FA Cup winners.
The visitors were more expansive after the break and created a huge chance to level when Dani Ceballos put Lacazette through on goal , but Alisson stood up well to block the French striker ’ s shot .
Klopp introduced Jota for his league debut 10 minutes from time and the Portuguese international should have sealed the win when he fired into the side - netting from Salah ’ s excellent through ball .
The Egyptian was less generous moments later when he stole the ball of Jota ’ s toes and failed to beat Leno .
But Jota did not have to wait long for his first Liverpool goal as a sweetly- struck volley found the bottom corner to show why the Reds spent £ 41 million ( $52 million ) to sign him from Wolves .

Bayern suffer their first defeat of 2020

Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat since December 2019 as they were well beaten at Hoffenheim.
Bayern had won their past 23 matches, and were unbeaten in 32, a run that saw them win last season’s treble and the Uefa Super Cup on Thursday.

But Andrej Kramaric scored twice, including an injury-time penalty, to seal a famous Hoffenheim win.

The hosts are managed by Sebastian Hoeness, who was Bayern’s youth coach last season.

BREAKING: Chelsea stage dramatic comeback to draw West Brom 3-3

September 26, 2020

Chelsea staged a superb second - half fightback from three goals down as Tammy Abraham ’ s last - gasp strike rescued a thrilling 3 - 3 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday .
Frank Lampard ’ s expensively assembled side were torn apart in the first half at the Hawthorns as Callum Robinson ’ s brace and Kyle Bartley ’ s goal punished woeful defending .
Chelsea captain Thiago Silva was guilty of an woeful mistake on his Premier League debut when the former Paris Saint - Germain defender gifted the ball to Robinson for his second goal .
But Mason Mount reduced the deficit soon after the break and Callum Hudson - Odoi got Chelsea’ s second before Abraham equalised deep into stoppage - time.
It was a much - needed show of spirit from Chelsea after their defeat against Liverpool last weekend .
The prospect of a second successive loss had Lampard visibly fuming on the touchline in the first half , but Chelsea responded with a much - improved display .
While Lampard will be relieved by evidence of Chelsea’ s attacking potency, there must be questions about their shambolic defence .
Despite dropping error - prone Kepa Arrizabalaga after the goalkeeper ’ s costly mistakes against Brighton and Liverpool this season , Lampard learned that Chelsea’ s problems run deeper than who is between the posts .
Lampard ’ s £ 200 million ( $254 million ) close - season spending spree was supposed to turn Chelsea into title challengers, but on this evidence they are still way behind champions Liverpool .
Willy Caballero took over in goal, but he was hardly convincing and Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy, signed from Rennes earlier this week , looks certain to make his debut soon .
Kepa , the world ’ s most expensive keeper , could leave Chelsea on loan before the transfer window closes in October .
– Abraham to the rescue –
Despite Lampard ’ s changes , Chelsea were still creaky at the back and it took just four minutes for Albion to exploit their frailties.
Marcos Alonso is likely to lose his place at left - back when summer signing Ben Chilwell is fully fit and the Spaniard did his cause little good with a woeful header straight to Matheus Pereira.
Robinson was picked out by Pereira and he advanced to the edge of the Chelsea area before drilling a low shot through Reece James’ legs and past Caballero’ s slow dive .
Timo Werner was inches away from equalising when the Germany forward met Mount ’ s cross with a volley that hit the crossbar .
Silva made a horrendous mistake that led to Robinson’ s second goal in the 25 th minute .
Allowing Mateo Kovacic ’ s pass to slip under his foot inside his own half , Silva surrendered possession to Robinson with embarrassing ease and was left with a sheepish look on his face as the Albion striker made him pay with a clinical finish .
There was worse to come for Chelsea three minutes later when their sloppy defence failed to pick up Darnell Furlong at Pereira ’ s corner and his flick reached Bartley , who was played onside by James and slotted past Caballero from close - range .
Lampard changed the tone of the match when he sent on Cesar Azpilicueta and Hudson - Odoi at the interval.
If Lampard read the riot act to his flops at the break , he got an immediate response as Mount fired home from 20 yards in the 55 th minute .
Chelsea were more dynamic now and Hudson - Odoi gave them hope when he played a neat one - two with Kai Havertz and slotted into the far corner after 70 minutes .
With full - time just seconds away, Abraham came to Chelsea’ s rescue when the strike tapped in after Albion keeper Sam Johnstone turned Mount ’ s shot into his path .
Albion appealed for handball against Havertz in the build- up but Chelsea’ s luck was in as VAR let the goal stand

Trossard Equals Ronaldo Mark As Brighton Hit Woodwork Incredible 5 Times Against Man Utd

September 26, 2020

Manchester United rode their luck to beat Brighton after Leandro Trossard hit the woodwork three times to equal Cristiano Ronaldo's mark from back in 2006.

The Red Devils picked up their first victory of the new Premier League season in dramatic fashion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men ran out 3-2 winners after a last gasp Bruno Fernandes penalty cancelled out a stoppage-time equaliser from Solly March.

Brighton took the lead via a Neal Maupay penalty, only to be pegged back when Lewis Dunk scored an own goal just before half-time.

A brilliant solo effort from Marcus Rashford put United 2-1 up early in the second period, and looked like being the winning goal until March bundled the ball in at the back post with 95 minutes on the clock.

The Seagulls thought they'd held on for a valuable point as Chris Kavanagh blew the final whistle following a Red Devils corner, but play was brought back after VAR picked up that Maupay had blocked a Harry Maguire header with his hand.

Fernandes stepped up to cooly convert and give the visitors all three points, leaving Graham Potter's side lamenting a number of missed chances which could have easily altered the final outcome.

Brighton dominated the contest for large periods, and could even have won by a clear margin had the woodwork not come to the Red Devils rescue on a total of five occasions.

Three of those efforts came from Trossard, who has become the first man to hit the upright three times in a single match since Cristiano Ronaldo for United against Newcastle in 2006.

More to follow.
